What is the difference between Sunan and Jami’ according to hadith terminology?

The Sunan works follow the order which is generally found in works of fiqh, they begin with purification (tahārah) and end with the will (wasāya).

The Jāmi’ works contain all categories of hadīth, these are eight according to the scholars of hadīth.

  1. Siyar (expeditions)

  2. Ādāb (etiquettes)

  3. Tafsīr (Quranic exegesis)

  4. Aqāid (Creed)

  5. Fitan (Tribulations)

  6. Ashrāt (Signs of the last day)

  7. Ahkām (Rulings)

  8. Manāqib (Virtues)

The names of Imām al-Tirmidhī’s work:

The compilation of Imam Tirmidhī although known famously as a Jāmi’ it is also referred to as a Sunan, due to Imam Tirmidhī following the order of a sunan for the beginning of his book. The third are least famous name of this book is Sahīh al-Tirmidhī , this is due to majority of its narrations being authentic.
