Understanding the Structure of Arabic Words Arabic Morphology (ʿIlm al-Ṣarf) is the science that unlocks how Arabic words are formed, transformed, and understood. By studying roots, patterns, and verb structures, students gain the tools needed to recognise the meanings of words and appreciate the depth of classical Arabic texts. This course provides a structured introduction to the foundations of Ṣarf, helping students develop the linguistic skills needed to read and analyse Arabic with greater clarity and confidence. Through practical examples and guided exercises, students will learn how Arabic words evolve from their root letters and how different patterns produce new meanings. What You Will Study During the course, students will explore: Roots and Patterns Understanding how the Arabic language is built upon triliteral and quadriliteral roots. Verb Forms Learning the different verb structures and how meaning changes across patterns. Derived Nouns Studying verbal nouns, active and passive participles, and other derived forms. Morphological Analysis Developing the ability to break down and analyse Arabic words. Classical Text Practice Applying the rules of Ṣarf to traditional Islamic texts. Course Progression After completing the foundational stage, students will progress to: Intermediate Level: ʿIlm al-Ṣīghah Advanced Level: Marāḥ al-Arwāḥ These classical texts deepen understanding of Arabic morphology and prepare students for advanced Arabic studies.
