From wudu to the salam
How to pray
A calm walk through salah, one step at a time. Made for everyone: new to Islam, coming back to prayer, or brushing up. It follows the Hanafi method, and you can go at your own pace.
Before the prayer
Wudu, the key to prayer
Prayer begins with wudu. Tap a step to see where the water goes.
Tap a step above.
FardFour parts are fard: the face, the arms to the elbows, a quarter of the head, and the feet to the ankles. The rest is sunnah and gives the wudu its full reward.
What breaks wudu
- Anything that leaves the front or back passage.
- Flowing blood or pus.
- Vomiting a mouthful or more.
- Deep sleep, fainting or intoxication.
- Audible laughter inside a prayer that has bowing and prostration.
Get ready
Five quick checks
Before you say the first takbir, tick these off.
FardThese are conditions of the prayer. The intention is in the heart, for example: I intend to pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr.
Rak'ah 1
Stand and begin
- Stand upright, eyes towards the place of prostration.
- Raise your hands and say Allahu akbar.
- Fold your hands, right over left.
- Say the opening supplication quietly, then seek refuge in Allah and say Bismillah.
- Recite al-Fatihah and a surah. Aloud if you are the imam in Fajr, Maghrib and Isha, quietly otherwise.
Brothers: thumbs level with the earlobes, then hands folded below the navel. Feet about a hand's span apart.
Sisters: hands raised to the shoulders, then folded on the chest. Feet together.
Allahu akbar.
Allah is the Greatest.
Glory and praise to You, O Allah. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god but You.
FardThe opening takbir, standing, and reciting at least one verse. Wajibal-Fatihah and a further surah in the first two rak'ahs. Sunnahthe opening supplication and the hand position.
Rak'ah 1
Bow, then rise
- Say Allahu akbar and bow.
- Keep your back level, so a small object resting on it would not roll off.
- Hands on the knees, fingers spread. Say the tasbih three times.
- Rise upright. Alone or as imam, say Sami'allahu liman hamidah. Everyone says Rabbana lakal-hamd.
Subhana rabbiyal-'adhim.
Glory to my Lord, the Magnificent.
Sami'allahu liman hamidah.
Allah hears the one who praises Him.
Rabbana lakal-hamd.
Our Lord, all praise is Yours.
FardThe bow itself. Wajibstaying calm long enough to say the tasbih once, and standing up before going down to prostrate.
Rak'ah 1
Prostrate
- Say Allahu akbar and go down: knees first, then hands, then nose and forehead.
- Seven parts touch the ground: forehead, both hands, both knees and the toes of both feet.
- Say the tasbih three times.
- Say Allahu akbar and sit up for a calm moment. You may say Allahumma ighfir li.
- Prostrate a second time the same way.
Subhana rabbiyal-a'la.
Glory to my Lord, the Most High.
FardPlacing the forehead and the tip of the nose on the ground, two prostrations in every rak'ah.
Rak'ah 2
Rise and sit
- Rise saying Allahu akbar and pray the second rak'ah the same way.
- Start with Bismillah and al-Fatihah. You do not repeat the opening supplication.
- After the second prostration, sit.
- In a three or four rak'ah prayer, say the tashahhud only at this first sitting, then rise with takbir.
Brothers: sit on the left foot with the right foot upright.
Sisters: sit with both legs out to the right side.
WajibThe first sitting in prayers of three or four rak'ahs, and the tashahhud in both sittings.
The ending
Tashahhud and salam
- Sit and recite the tashahhud.
- In the last sitting, add the blessings on the Prophet ﷺ and a dua.
- Turn your face to the right and say the salam, then to the left.

All greetings, prayers and good words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar.
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the next, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah.
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.

After the salam
Remember Allah
- Say Astaghfirullah three times.

- Raise your hands for your own dua, starting and ending with blessings on the Prophet ﷺ.

What breaks the prayer
The main things to avoid
- Speaking on purpose, even one word.
- Eating or drinking.
- A lot of movement that does not belong to the prayer, such as walking several steps.
- Laughing so that you hear it yourself. A smile is fine.
- Anything that breaks wudu.
- Turning your chest away from the qiblah.
If your prayer breaks, pray it again from the start.
Questions people ask
Do I need to know Arabic before I start?
Start with what you can. The recitation is in Arabic, so learn it one piece at a time, and read the meaning so your heart is present. Ask a teacher to listen to you and correct you gently.
What if I cannot stand?
Someone who truly cannot stand prays sitting. Someone who cannot sit prays lying down, gesturing with the head. Ask a teacher about your situation.
What is the difference between fard, wajib and sunnah?
Missing a fard breaks the prayer. Missing a wajib on purpose is sinful and the prayer must be repeated. If it is missed by mistake, it is put right with the prostrations of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw). The sunnah acts perfect the prayer and bring more reward.
What if I forget a step?
Ask your teacher about the case in front of you. In general, forgetting a wajib is repaired by the prostrations of forgetfulness. Do not worry about getting everything perfect on day one.
This guide follows the Hanafi method as set out in The Essentials of Worship, a course in Hanafi fiqh. For your own situation, ask a qualified teacher.
