Making up missed prayers
Every fard prayer you missed stays owed until you pray it. Here is how to make it up, in order, with a simple counter.
A fard prayer you missed stays owed until you pray it. It makes no difference if it was missed by sleep, forgetting, illness or on purpose.
- Pray it with the same number of rak'ahs as the one you missed. Fajr is two, Zuhr four, and so on.
- If you missed five or fewer, pray them in order before the next prayer.
- If you missed more than five, the order falls away. Praying in order is still better.
- Name it in your intention, for example: the missed Zuhr of yesterday. If you have many, intend the earliest missed Zuhr, then the next one, working forward.

FardOnly praying it removes the debt. Witr is wajib in the Hanafi school, so it is made up too. If you owe a large number, ask a teacher to help you make a plan.
This guide follows the Hanafi method as set out in The Essentials of Worship, a course in Hanafi fiqh. For your own situation, ask a qualified teacher.
