The miqat
What if I crossed the miqat without ihram?
Go back to a miqat and enter ihram there before you begin tawaf, and no penalty is due. If you enter ihram after the miqat and do not go back, a sacrifice in the Haram becomes due.

What to do
If you realise before tawaf, return to a miqat, enter ihram and continue. Nothing is due on you in that case.
If you do not go back
If you enter ihram after passing the miqat and do not go back, a sacrifice in the Haram becomes due. Ask a scholar in Makkah about your exact situation.
How to avoid it
If you are flying, be in ihram before the plane crosses the miqat. See the miqat for UK flights and putting on ihram before your flight.
More questions

The guidance is to go back to any miqat and enter ihram there before you begin tawaf.

A sacrifice in the Haram is due only if you entered ihram after the miqat and did not go back.
